Commercial film production: from brief to finished clips
Practical guidance for marketing teams, manufacturers and agencies
A commercial needs to communicate a clear message and work in its intended channel. Concept, filming, editing, picture finishing and sound need to fit together. What should you decide early, and when does an external production partner help?

Before filming: What should the viewer take away?
Start with a specific task: should someone understand a function, imagine a product in everyday use or discover a brand? A film that tries to explain everything at once can become confusing. One main message per clip gives the concept and edit a clear direction.
Message and audience
Your product knowledge is the starting point. We translate it into scenes showing the relevant application, and agree technical statements and product presentation with your team.
Channels and versions
Websites, social media and exhibitions often need different lengths, framing and openings. Plan portrait versions at the shot-list stage so that important action does not later fall outside the frame.
Scope and approvals
We establish locations, crew, set preparation, schedule, usage rights and the required files. A named contact and agreed review stages make decisions easier on set and in post-production.
Why commission an external partner? A production partner connects the different crafts with your communication goal. You do not have to manage every handover yourself: which shot is missing for the short edit? Which scene needs extra lighting preparation? When must the voice-over script be approved? Planning these questions together helps address changes while they are still manageable.
Inside a production by FF Pictures
SUN@HOME for Osram / LEDVANCE: turning a house into a film set
A series of clips was produced for the SUN@HOME advertising campaign. Around 40 people were involved in the production overall. A house was furnished and decorated for filming. Preparation also included non-destructive custom modifications for lighting placement.

The set photographs show what stays behind the finished commercial: temporary construction, lighting, cameras and picture monitoring. A believable domestic scene and space for the production need to work together. Set dressing is therefore part of the filming plan, as well as the appearance of the scene.

What does this mean for your project? An everyday scene can require considerable preparation. Assess the location early: where can lighting go? Which sightlines need to stay clear? Which constructions can be removed afterwards? This lets you plan the scene and workflow without permanently changing how the house can be used.
During the shoot: connect action, lighting and continuity
A scene is usually covered in several shots. Movement, eyelines, props and lighting need to fit together in the edit. Monitoring helps identify framing or picture problems while the location is still set up.
A lighting product introduces an additional task: the product’s own light and supplementary filming light need to be balanced deliberately. Camera capture and subsequent colour processing affect how bright and colourful the scene appears. A camera image on a monitor is therefore not a measurement proving a product specification.

Editing, post-production and sound: turning footage into a film
Editing: make the message work
We organise footage, select shots and develop rhythm and duration. A review edit lets you assess the story before detailed finishing. Short versions are checked for their own opening and conclusion.
Picture finishing: a coherent result
Colour grading matches shots and shapes the agreed look. Graphics, retouching and titles are added as commissioned. SDR or HDR is chosen for the intended use; HDR does not automatically improve every advertising release.
Sound studio: voice, atmosphere and music
Voice recording, dialogue editing, effects and mixing connect the picture sequence. Music can support the message while leaving speech clear. Voice talent, languages, music rights and required audio versions are defined in the scope.
FF Pictures connects film production with editing and picture post-production. Sound studio services and any additional crafts are agreed to suit the project. You can also commission work on existing footage without arranging a new shoot.
At handover: which files will your team actually need?
“The finished film” may mean several deliverables. A clear version list saves your team from having to create missing versions later. For the quotation, we discuss:
- Duration and framing: the main film, short edits and landscape, portrait or square versions for the intended channels.
- Language and text: language versions, embedded or separate subtitles, and a version without titles if required.
- Picture and sound: agreed SDR/HDR files, audio mixes and the destination’s technical specification.
- Rights and approval: usage rights for imagery, music and participants; named versions and agreed revision stages.
The final exported files are checked for picture, sound, text and the agreed technical requirements. Project files, source footage and additional versions should be included in the scope if you will need them later.
A short project outline is enough to start
Describe the product, intended message, planned channels and schedule. Mention any footage or concept you already have. You do not need a finished script or technical specification for the first conversation.
