Display calibration for home cinema & post-production

Home cinema · video production · post-production

Assess films and video on displays configured for their intended use. We calibrate your TV, projector or post-production monitors and check playback under defined conditions. For multiple displays, we combine measurement and visual matching to help you judge differences between display technologies.

A dependable picture takes more than matching measurement values. FF Pictures combines display metrology with a deep understanding of professional video production, bringing settings, signal paths and visual assessment together.

Calibration for your application

Home cinema: TVs and projectors

We assess your display together with its source equipment and viewing room. The aim is a well-founded picture setup for your films, with suitable white-point, tone-response and colour settings for the SDR and HDR modes you need.

The corrections that are feasible and useful depend on the display, its controls and the way you use it.

Post-production: multiple monitors

Reference monitors, editing displays and client monitors need to support a shared assessment of the picture. We calibrate multiple displays, including mixed technologies, and agree targets, monitor roles, ambient lighting and signal paths with your team.

We take account of each display’s characteristics and the requirements of your production workflow.

Bringing measurements and perception together

Why displays with matching measurements can look different

Two displays can have the same measured white point and colour values yet look visibly different. Different display technologies emit light with different spectral distributions, and people also differ in their spectral sensitivity. This phenomenon, known as observer metamerism, is particularly relevant when several displays are viewed together to assess the picture.

We combine instrument-based calibration with visual matching under defined viewing conditions. Together, we agree a reference and practical compromises: which rendition matters for your work, which differences can be reduced, and where do the displays impose limits? We document the agreed match and any remaining differences.

Profiling a colorimeter against a spectroradiometer improves the measurement basis for that display. The additional visual match takes the viewer’s perception into account. These steps serve different purposes; different display technologies cannot be guaranteed to look identical to every observer.

Our measurement and calibration tools

We use Admesy Hera, Minolta CA-410, Admesy PCM2X-271, Calman and our own measurement and calibration solution, InnoPQ™ DMIDMS. We select instruments, test signals and methods to suit the task.

Our understanding of display technology and professional video workflows helps us interpret measurements and assess the effects of display settings. This includes considering SDR and HDR behaviour, as well as the limits of each technology in its actual application.

What you receive

We agree the scope before starting, based on your equipment and requirements:

  • Defined calibration targets and documented measurement and viewing conditions.
  • Agreed display settings and, where suitable, corrections in the signal path.
  • Measurements to assess performance before and after calibration.
  • For multiple displays: an agreed reference, visual matching and documented compromises.
  • Guidance on continued use and appropriate follow-up measurements.

Understand the technology and make informed decisions

We treat your displays as part of the production or playback chain. This helps us distinguish between differences caused by a display, its operating mode, the source or colour processing. The result is a sound basis for your team’s picture assessment.

How we work together

  1. Establish the equipment, application and required operating modes.
  2. Check the signal path, room and initial performance.
  3. Calibrate and agree the visual match for multiple displays.
  4. Document the results and review the settings with you.

Questions before commissioning

Can you calibrate a single home-cinema display?

Yes. We work with individual TVs and projectors as well as multiple monitors in production environments. Share the model, location and intended use so we can discuss a suitable scope.

Can different display technologies work together?

Yes, with a clear reference and appropriate targets. When matching their appearance, we consider observer metamerism and each display’s technical limits. The useful match is the one that supports your specific workflow.

Do you also offer calibration training?

Yes. We offer separate training for teams that want to measure and calibrate their own displays. Calibration services and training can be combined to suit your requirements.

Which displays would you like calibrated?

Tell us the display models and quantity, location, application and required SDR/HDR modes. For multiple displays, let us know which are viewed together and which monitor should serve as the reference. We can then agree measurement requirements, useful targets and a suitable quotation. Fees depend on the equipment, location, measurement scope and project duration.
